Kaise Kaise Haadse Sahte Rahe

A gazal that has very simple words that come out of an anguished heart. Sung by Jagjit Singh

Hum Tere Shahar Mein

I am rediscovering some of the old gazals. This one sung by Ghulam Ali and outstanding lyrics by Qaiser Ul Jafri. The song can be heard here and can be seen here

Raatonko uth uth kar

While idle surfing Youtube I found this song Raatonko Uth Uth Kar sung by Gurdas Mann. The song has some really good lyrics but the way the video has been picturised is exactly in another mood.

Kya Jaanu Sajan

I recently rediscovered क्या जानू सजन from बहारोंके सपने . The movie is about lost aspirations of the have-nots in a post Independance India. The song itself is recorded in double track inspite of the challenges. In those days (1967) electronics was not established fully in Hindi film music. It is believed that RD recorded the song in Lata's voice and rerecorded some portions on the same tape after removing the erase head of the recorder. The lyrics by Majrooh would make even the most unromantic person to fall in love and be loved! What do I know my dear whats a sad evening A hundred lights lit up the moment I uttered your name (This one is tough ... lemme try though) Since when our eyes met your gaze formed the bindiya on my forehead The grip of y...

Kisike Vaadepe Kyu Aitbaar Humne Kiya

Image
The unreleased song - Kisi Ke Vaade Pe Kyu (The text in blue letters are links to those songs) “The Burning Train” was an album with songs belonging to unique genres. The title song by RD and Annette has imposing sounds from the Brass section and superb setting on Bass Guitar. The sounds of the passing train were recorded by RD himself on a train station! This song does not have an Antara. The next song “ Teri Nazar Hai Mujh Pe ” has Asha Bhosle crooning for both Parvin Babi and Hema Malini. For Parvin she goes Western and for Hema she goes classical. RD Burman has seamlessly fused in sounds of Drums, Guitars, Tabla, Flute and Sitar while retaining the same tune for both the actors. Another song “ Pehli Nazar Mein Humne To ” was another experiment such that the entire song is is sung by chorus of established singers. The female parts are sung by Asha and Usha Mangeshkar while the male parts are rendered by Kishore Kumar and Mohammed Rafi. Another song “ Pal Do Pal Ka Sa...

Maine Dilse Kahaa

Next one is from Rog - मैंने दिलसे कहा ढूँढ लाना खुशी "Rog" is the story of an overworked police officer who falls in love with the woman whose murder he is investigating. He has his own psychological problems. The film flopped probably because the of the wrong selection of the woman who is mudered. That lady cannot act and is nowhere is she sensual as demanded by the story line. The director appears confused between sensuality and sexuality. Irfan Khan is first rate as usual. The song plays in the background as he leaves the psychologist after an attempted suicide.

Main Jahaan Rahu

Another good one is मैं जहाँ रहूँ from नमस्ते लंडन . This song is composed by Himesh Reshammiya! Wow! I was pleasantly surprised and the voice of Rahaat fateh Ali Khan .

Hazaaron Khwashishein Aisi

Ghalib’s poetry has the quintessential quality of striking exactly that right chord in your heart. This film by Sudhir Mishra takes its name and inspiration from the above. It has a good story, well defined characters and some good acting by newcomers. Still, I feel the film should have been made more fast paced and exciting. It tends to drag in a lot of places. The story, involving three young protagonists, spans five years from the late 60’s, when the Naxal movement was gaining steam in Bengal, to the mid-70’s, with the imposition of Emergency in a power-grabbing manoeuver by Indira Gandhi. I have not experienced this era and would go only by hearsay and reading books and newspaper articles. The film attempts to capture the angst of the youth, as well as the pains of the adolescent Indian democracy transitioning from its post-Independence innocence. Hazaaron…. is really a p...

Leja Leja Re

असेच एक गाणे आहे " ले जा ले जा रे " sung by Sheya Ghoshal and Ustad Vilaayat Khan from Ustaad and The Divaa's . The video is pretty ordinary and the actress fails to portray the innocence of the girl singing the song. The heroine is worried that her beloved is not paying enough attention to her. She is wondering about what she lacks that he is not able to hold his attention. I like this line of this song a lot. It has a pun when she says that she wants to get drenched in a celebration of passion and emotions the whole night with him. She desires be with him all the night at the same time she also means that she has shed enough tears being lonely all nights and wants him to be with her.

Tu Jo Nahi Hai To

A beautiful song तू जो नही है तो sung originally by S B John of the (then) East Pakistan in 1959 for the film Savera with lyrics by Fayyaz Hashmi and music by Manzoor Hussain. This song has been beautifully adapted in the film Woh Lamhe and sung by Glen John. Whatever differences of opinion I may have with Mahesh Bhatt's views, but this guy makes movies on varied subjects. His themes are always different than others and his songs are good. This song has two versions Version one Version two

Lyrics

There are some songs which we like a lot. Sometimes there is just one line in the song that instant appeals. Many times we feel that old songs had good lyrics, but there are some "new" songs too with good lyrics and the feel is not restricted to romance. This is one of the songs that I had first heard when I was a kid. Though I failed to understand the meaning then, the tune and the sax remained with me. Some years went by, I had almost forgotten it and then I heard it again a few years back on TV when it was sung by Abhijeet as a tribute to Asha Bhosle. Incidentally, as a kid I had always wished that TV should only play songs. There was only one channel in those days and it had songs played in a half hour slot on Thursday nights only! It may sound preposterous but that was the situation in the socialist India of those times! After so many years the wish to have an exclusive channel for music was fulfilled but now the music channels ...
