Mera Kuchh Saamaan

It is very difficult to translate Gulzar. He is prose personified. It only gets worse when an amateur like me attempts to do it. Yet inspite of the limitations of my knowledge of Gulzar and English I cannot resist the temptation to put my interpretation to his work. This song is an expression of the female protagonist who is a very dear friend of the hero. In her thoughts she is gently prodding him to remember the times that they had shared. Every sentence is like she asking him,” Do you remember?” She knows her limitations of the relationship she shared with the hero and also understands that the compulsion, of his having to get into another relationship approved by society. She tries very hard to accept her position and control her fondness towards him. She expresses this as a metaphor when she refers to the “things”. The “things” are actually the moments that they have shared and the remembrances of those moments. मेरा कुछ सामान , तुम्हारे पास पड़ा है सावन के कुछ भीगे-भीग

Three hours at Frankfurt

Image
Ajit As I prepared myself to settle in the waiting lounge seat at Frankfurt airport I looked around to check for familiar faces. Usually I am a private person but I like to hear upon conversations. My niece was travelling with me to visit India. Grown up in the US of A she wanted to experience “spirituality” in India. She was in her own world with her Ipod.   The previous flight from New York had made me very tired. I looked around and among the many Indian faces I saw Ritu. Almost two decades of separation and I still found my heart going away. She was busy trying to give instructions to the teenager beside her. Was it her kid? I looked around to search for Gaurav. A few glances and I understood that she was travelling with her son. For a moment I thought that we had made eye contact but she seemed too busy instructing her kid. Even as I continued to spy her, my mind went back sixteen years. Ours was an almost arranged marriage....meaning we knew each other and then it

Sagar, Lokesh and Niti

Niti Isn’t it funny that you plan your life in a way but its destiny that controls your life. I was pleasantly surprised when my boss Steve gave me the day off when he came to know that it was my marriage anniversary. I called up Sagar to share the good news, but he was tied up in some customer presentation. Sitting at home all alone gave me a lot of time to introspect and events from the past eighteen years flashed across my mind. Sagar and I graduated from the same college. So many events passed by. The school graduation of our kid Arpita, her growing years, my mothers passing away, our last day in college, my first job ….. so many things. I started surfing through the old pictures on my computer. It was then that I noticed Lokesh in one of our office pictures. In those days Sagar, Lokesh and I were inseperable. We shared the same likes and interests and had a blast together. Looking at the pictures of the treks that we had I remembered Lokesh as a caring friend. He always to

Seeli hawaa chhoo gayee

Check this song from Libaas. There’s a married couple Sudhir & Seema (Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi). Both are active in the theatre. He is intense and she tends to rebel. Enter his old friend TK (Raj Babbar) who is very unlike Sudhir. Gradually Seema drifts apart from Sudhir and towards TK. Though the story is about these three main characters, their ego’s and bondage, Libaas like a typical Gulzar film revolves around the female character. This song is picturised on a boat under moonlight on Shabana and Raj Babbar. She is reminiscing her earlier relationship with Sudhir and what it gave her at the same time looking ahead to a more meaningful newer one with TK. Gulzar’s lyrics are fabulous and RD’s music top class. The songs of this movie are more in the Ghar and Ijazat mode. Like other Gulzar songs this one too is replete with metaphors and puns. One can interpret the words in a number of ways. Sample this - सिली हवा can mean the cold damp wind or the sewn wind.

Goodbye Airtel Digital TV

Airtel Direct to Home (DTH) service goes by the name Airtel Digital TV (ADTV). I have had some very bad experiences with Airtel. The first bad experience came at the time of installation. I have expressed that in this post . I have finally disconnected ADTV after a year and half. This is what led me to forgo Rs.2000 and move over to another DTH service provider. I came to know from an online forum that there were some new channels available on ADTV. I called up their call center and was told that these new channels were available on a new satellite and that the direction of my existing dish would have to be changed. They would send an engineer who would do it free of cost. It did not happen for a number of days and then ADTV changed their records such that I was on the new satellite but the direction of my dish was unchanged. This stopped me from watching any channel! I wrote a number of emails and since no one at Airtel seemed interested, I marked a copy to Mr.Sunil Mittal. I got his

Indian Men Are Ugly Says Sagarika Ghose Listen this guys. This is too funny. Rajdeep Sardesai’s wife Sagarika Ghose recently twitted from Thailand that all Indian guys are ugly. The responses that she got are really funny. anoopc: Beauty is skin deep Sagarika Ghose ji ,but not all Indian men are Raj-deep tarouni: pity for Sagarika Ghose and tribe, moment they touch down on a foreign soil, country"men" started to seem ugly forgetting own roots! greatbong: When Sagarika Ghose says "all Indian men are ugly" does she include herself in the "Indian men" classifier? chakraviyuh: Dear Sagarika Ghose, Indian men are ugly, Indian women are gorgeous, and you will still be counted as one of the boys. shanu8: RT @kunalraheja: Sagarika walked into a bar. All good looking men walked out. mrnarci: By making Sagarika Ghose trend, we are being ugly men. gupta_n: seems Sagarika Ghose got inf. complex from Barkha and has got her

Micromax Q5fb

Image
Recently I purchased a new celphone - Micromax Q5fb (The fb stands for Facebook). I had used my old phone for too long and was looking at making a small beginning to graduate towards smartphones. My requirements were very modest. I wanted a GSM phone that had a very good capacity address book, could play mp3 music, can set your own mp3 tune as a ringtone, had a modest camera, had a QWERTY keypad and had FM radio! The biggest constraint that I put on myself was that I would not spend more than Rs.4000 on my new phone. I had also kept myself open to the idea of buying an Indian handset. I was surprised when I found Micromax Q5fb. It cost me all of Rs.3700 and had a lot of features.
