The Jalpari theme from Sagar - 2

 The Jalpari theme from Sagar.

This article is about the song the
“Jalpari Theme from Sagar”. Picturised on Dimple Kapadia, the music is the backdrop where the hero sees the heroine for the first time early in the morning as she is enjoying waves on the beach. Watching the scene on screen one wonders what makes this setup so great. Is it the beauty of the heroine or the camera work by SM Anwar or RD Burman’s background score?

Now that you have heard the tune here’s some trivia … lots of it. Read till the end!

Going back in time, RD must have been obsessed with the tune (he used it many times in various songs). It started with the French classic "Concerto Pour Une Voix" by Danielle Licari in 1969.

This tune inspired many musicians around the world and was used and re-used in many forms then. Just search “Concerto Pour Une Voix” on YouTube and you will see most the versions. And this keeps happening all the time. Like Mike Ladd in his song Airwave Hysteria used “Jaane Do Na” from “Sagar”

Wyclef Jean in his song Apocalypse had also used the opening tune of "Concerto Pour Une Voix" by Danielle Licari.

In 1974 Pink Floyd had used the same tune to create "Shine On You Crazy Diamond". RD’s Jalpari Theme is more closer to Pink Floyd’s.

RD’s “la affaire” with the tune started long back. This tune finds place in the song “Yeh Mastani Dagar” from Hifazat (1973) at about 02:15.

Later Heeralal Pannalal made in 1978 had the song “Aaja Mere Pyar Aaja”. This song itself had two versions in the movie – One that of a father singing to his toddler daughter and the other an “item” song!

The Mukhda of this song was used to create “Aaja Meri Jaan” a decade later. By the way the tune of the antara of this song – Hai Sooni Tere Bin Jeevan Ki Dagar – is similar to “Yeh Bindiya ki Basti Ye Paayal Ke Paaon” from Tak Dhoom Naacho from Kaala Sona!

Another reference to the tune of the antara is found in the song “Saathi Aisa Lagta Hai” from “Namumkin” picturized on Zeenat Aman.

And who can forget “Tu Chaand Nagar Ki Shehzaadi” from “Duniya”? Rishi Kapoor wooing Amrita Singh while humming the same short tune! By the way this song has the mukhda ending on the tune of “Aur De Jaate Hai Yaadein.. Tanhayee Mein Tadapa ne Ko”! In one of his recordings we could hear Rd say “Iska Kuchch Bhi Kar Sakte Hai”. He really did that. Its like a master chef who is least worried with what is available. He mixes the dishes such that we never know what was used from what!

He used the tune of this song to create “Tumi Koto Je Dure” as a Bengali Puja song.

“Tumi Koto Je Dure” starts with vibraphone by Buji Lord followed by a controlled piece on the Flugel Horn played by Joseph Monsorate. This is again followed by the now familiar starting strains of Aye sagar Ki Lehron. Sunil Kaushik’s classy electric guitar plays softly before RD goes full throated in his own voice Ta Ra Ta Ra Ra.

Asha’s melody in Tumi Koto ... becomes Harmony in the Jalpari theme with the chorus going “La La La ... La La ...” . The transformation is total bliss to experience.

Later he used the same tune with a few tweaks to create “Aaja Meri Jaan” for T-Series. But “Aaja Mere Jaan” was not a movie planned for RD Burman. Anuradha Paudwal had offered him to compose an album for her featuring 8 duets. There were 4 singers selected to accompany her - SP Balasubramaniam, Amit Kumar, Shailendra Singh and Danny Denzongpa. However, then the company sat on those songs and they were not released. One of the songs composed was "AAJA MERI JAAN" which was used as the title song for the movie. 20 years later, Bhushan Kumar got DJ Phukan to compose a new version of the song with singer Mauli. This song was in the movie I Love New Year, starring Sunny Deol and Kangana Ranaut.

So it means, tune of

"Dekh aise na sata" from Heeralal Pannalal
= "Vaasta hai khuda ka" from Gunehgar Kaun
= "Kaha tha tune sanam" from Aaja Meri Jaan
= “Kotha je hariye gele” from Tumi Koto Je Dure
😊

RD’s love for the tune continued and he used the opening tune as the opening tune of “Aye Sagar Ki Lehron” in Sunny Deol, Poonam Dhillon starrer “Samundar”

In 1987 came the movie “Apne Apne”. RD couldn’t resist to yet modify and use the tune for “Tune kiya Kya Jadu” picturized on Karan Shah and Mandakini. The tune of the antara is ditto the “Lalala Lala Lalala Lala” from the Jalpari Theme.
