Baap Ka Maal

RD’s “Baap Ka Maal”!

Some time ago, Vividh Bharti carried a series titled Meri Sangeet Yatra in its Sangeet Sarita programme at 7:30 AM. It featured conversations between R D Burman, Gulzar and Asha Bhosle. During one such episode he mentioned that he has used some of his fathers tunes. He used the phrase, “Baap Ka Maal”. Here is a link to that

With that as reference point, I’ve selected some songs that are originally created by Sachin Dev Burman and adapted by RD in his music. Some are popular and some not very well known.

Let me start with Kinaara. Thinking of Kinaara I can’t help mentioning “Why does Gulzar give that weird moustache to Jeetendra in all his films? Kinaara, Parichay, Khushboo – all of them have Jeetendra with that weird moustache.
As mentioned by RD in the Vividh Bharti programme the first song is from Kinaara. Ab Ke Na Saawan Barse by Lata Mangeshkar - https://youtu.be/RrZcovsvevM

And the original by S D Burman - Kadibo Na Fagun Gele - https://youtu.be/Vfkn7b6Zr54

Meethe Bol Bole sung by Lata Mangeshkar & Bhupendra Singh is another classic from the same movie. Other songs of this movie are also equally good, with Naam Gum Jaayega probably being the most popular. Coming back to the topic, here is Meethe Bol Bole from Kinaara

SDB’s song was on Hindustan Records which means it was probably before 1947. Some have suggested that this particular bandish is a Bengali adapation of Ustaad Adbul Karim Khan's 'Jamuna Kinare Dole Radha'.
Link to the original by SD Burman Madhu Brindabone Dole Radha

The next song that I want to mention is from an unreleased film Gulzar’s Devdas. The movie was to star Hema Malini, Sharmila Tagore & Dharmendra. Two reels were shot, one song recorded and then the movie was shelved. Here is that song – Kuhu Kuhu Koyalia - https://youtu.be/mjZLQAW9cRo

This was based on a S D Burman song with similar lyrics composed by Nazrul Islam- https://youtu.be/0ILokO_XADw

This song was in turn based on a very old Thumri by Ustad Fayyaz Khan - Na Maanungi Na Manungi - https://youtu.be/ceekh-5UC8g?t=60

Next song is a special one. One acquaintance quipped that director Basu Chatterjee used to like this song. He asked RD Burman to use the tune. (We’ll probably never know the story). Picturised on a naughty Ashok Kumar in Shaukeen – Jab Bhi koi Kangna Bole - https://youtu.be/ZWkucLNdyKE

The original by S D Burman - Nitol Paye Rinik Jhinik - https://youtu.be/3FrimYfyZNc

I will again return to a lesser known song from an unreleased Gulzar film Libaas – Kya Bura Hai Kya Bhala sung by Lata Mangeshkar and RD himself. Apart from Phoolonka Taaron Ka from Hare Raam Hare Krishna this must be the only other song that RD sang with Lata.

https://youtu.be/ZOpi2imHufM

This song is based on SD Burman’s Ami Soite Pari.

I’ll return to the comfortable territory of known songs. Toone O Rangile sung by Lata Mangeshkar from Kudrat - https://youtu.be/yeBf1c6kUoE

This song is based on a S D Burman melody - Hai Ki Je Kori E Mono Niya - from the year1948 –

https://youtu.be/ixv1-uqKrsA

Continuing with well known songs, here is the amazingly melancholic Khaali Haath Sham Aayee Hai from Ijaazat by Asha Bhosle - https://youtu.be/LysB0v2wKVY

Read all about this song here in one of my earlier blog-post.

The S D Burman original from 1940 is here - https://youtu.be/D-OqK9HzL9o . It is said that the great K L Saigal sat transfixed when he heard this song.

One modern day RD song Aap Ke Kamre Mein Koi Rehta Hai sung by RD, Kishore, Asha from Yaadon Ki Baaraat is also based on on a small piece by S D Burman. Read my blog for more details here

This song is based on a small 30 second clip from the title music of Sujata. Listen intently and you will also find strands of O Jaanewale Ho Sake Toh Laut Ke Aana from the same film (1963) - https://youtu.be/vxFh1q-Jj28?t=9

This list will be incomplete if I don’t include the most difficult song from the album Dil Padosi Hai sung by Asha Bhosle and penned by GulzarUmmeed Hogi Koihttps://youtu.be/1WGSNy-mNmg

This song has its roots in S D Burman’s Katha Kao Dao Saara. However, the music is composed not by him, but by Subol Dasgupta - https://youtu.be/HKYjT8tvsjM

To sum up all I can say is there’s always going to be this discussion about RD using SD’s music, but since they were a team the discussion is not needed. But have given us immense joy.
