Trip to Hari Hareshwar

From Dive Agar we decided to go to Hari Hareshwar. Actually this trip was decided at the spur of the moment and was not planned. Infact we did not have any maps with us and made a couple of wrong turns. That added to the mileage marginally.

Here are the Odometer readings and places enroute to Hari Hareshwar
Odometer reading ....Place
9043 .......................Start from Dive Agar at 9.30am
9047 .......................Asuf (pronounced as (Aasoof)
9049 .......................Dandguri
9054 .......................Shikhne
9055 .......................Bhardoli
9059 .......................Arathi (pronounced as Aaraathi). This is in Shrivardhan. We missed the left turn to Hari Hareshwar here. It is an unmarked turn almost a U-turn to left.

9066 .......................Ranavli
9069 .......................Malsure
9070 .......................Nigde
9073 .......................Saigaon
9080 .......................Hari Hareshwar.

For going to the Hari Hareshwar mandir take a right turn as soon as you enter Hari Hareshwar. For going to the MTDC resort take a left turn. Both the spots are half kilometer from the enrty point.

One can take the "pradakshina" to the temple. This route which goes up and down a hill and circumvents the temple is pretty scenic with the sea on the right and the mountain on the left . However this route gets immersed in water during high tides.

An ancient cave houses Shivaling. You have to go down a small entrance to get there and say your prayers.

The MTDC resort is located on the other side of the temple (almost 180 deg opposite). We had good sea food - Fish thali @ Rs.95 is sufficient for one adult or two kids. You can also get Chinese food at this resort. The small "hotels" near the mandir also serve hot food. However, their quality and ambience was a bit on the downside.

I diddn't find the beach at Hari Hareshwar to my liking. The one near the temple is only about 200 meters and is dirty. The MTDC resort has a 300 meter clean beach, but other parts are made of stones.

I had heard that Dolphins can be seen on the Hari Hareshwar beach. But we were not so lucky or else they aren't any Dolphins at all. Haha!

The adventuerers can even take a small boat to the north side of the bay and explore a land where the "Peshwas" or prime ministers of the Maratha Kingdom, originally resided. The "Peshwa Smarak" is of interest to most people who visit Shriwardhan. The town of Harihareshwar, known for its tranquil and picturesque beach is also landmarked by Kalbhairav - the Shiva temple.

One note : We could not get any range for our Airtel and Idea cellphones. The locals said that BSNL cellphones "sometimes" get range. Now what does that mean? You can buy rolls and batteries for your camera's near the mandir. Also it would be a good idea to carry a few candles and match sticks to take care of the load shedding.

On our return journey we prefered the Goa - Mumbai highway from Mangao onwards as that is a better road. The route is Mangao - Wakan Phata - Pali - Khopoli - expressway - Pune.

Wakan Phata is approximately 30 kms from Mangao and Khopoli is about 42 kms from Wakan Phata. I am not very sure about these numbers as we often stopped on the road.

We travelled by car - Nitin's cherry red Indica. The total distance covered was 440 kms and mostly on not so good road. The vehicle was excellant and gave an average of about 18.5kms to the liter with the AC in On mode most of the time. The vehicle is very comfortable. The only thing was shortage of space in the boot. But that was to be expected as its a 2 box vehicle and we were 2 families travelling.
