Kya Hua Ek Baat Par

Image
Kya Hua Ek Baat Par I rediscovered this song from Teri Kasam (1982) sung by Amit Kumar, lyrics by Anand Bakshi and music by RD Burman. Before I delve into the song, here’s some trivia as shared by Amit Kumar himself. The situation in the film is that the hero is heatbroken. RD had prepared the tune and Anand Bakshi was about to pen the lyrics. The producer of Teri Kasam told RD that he liked Manna De’s song “Kaun Aaya Mere Man Ke Dwaare” from “Dekh Kabira Roya, and that RD’s song should be based on that song! RD modified his tune such that the words “Kya Hua ...” have the tune similar to “Kaun Aaya …” ! The song is a soft melody. Amit Kumar has been blamed by the “music pandits” as being off tune, but here he does full justice to the song. He is one of those few singers who has a good bass in his voice. His “Aaaa” never sounds as “Aaee”. He is never nasal. Many of his contemporaries in their attempt to ape Kishore Kumar usually tend to sound nasal when they go for high pitch. Rel...

Do Naina Ek Kahani 2

Image
The year 1983, the film Masoom, music by RD Burman, lyrics by Gulzar and sung by Aarti Mukherjee. There would be hardly anyone who does not like this song or does not agree with the feelings and sentiments expressed by Gulzar in this song. What is this song really about?  I believe the song tells the tale of eyes. The stories that the eyes tell and hide, the emotions they express and reveal. In the movie it’s a gloomy monsoon brought on the family by the father. The mother is singing an Angaai Geet (अंगाई गीत) or a Lori (लोरी) to her daughters. She’s hurt and insulted by her husband’s infidelity. The kid born out of wedlock staying the the same house yearns for his mother. He seeks love from his new “mother” but is wary of her reaction as well. Tentative as he is in his expressions all he can do is remember his mother who is no more. The song is devoid of percussion in the Mukhda (मुखडा) . The only rhythm comes from Bass guitar, shakers and riff’s on the guitar. After the initial s...

The Jalpari theme from Sagar - 2

Image
The Jalpari theme from Sagar.   This article is about the song the “J alpari T heme ” from “ Sagar ”. Picturised on Dimple Kapadia, the music is the backdrop where the hero sees the heroine for the first time early in the morning as she is enjoying waves on the beach. Watching the scene on screen one wonders what makes this setup so great. Is it the beauty of the heroine or the camera work by SM Anwar or RD Burman’s background score? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VZk_rJ6_zY   Now that you have heard the tune here’s some trivia … lots of it. Read till the end!  Going back in time, RD must have been obsessed with the tune (he used it many times in various songs). It started with the French classic "Concerto Pour Une Voix" by Danielle Licari in 1969.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVghgS8_Yrg This tune inspired many musicians around the world and was used and re-used in many forms then. Just search “Concerto Pour Une Voix” on YouTube and yo...
