Tumse Milke Aisa Laga Tumse Milke

Tumse Milke Aisa Laga
The year 1989 was when Parinda was released. RD Burman was in in his worst phase of life. That year his films had average music – Joshilay, Mil Gayee Manzil Mujhe, Dost, Aag Se Khelenge, Parinda and Bahurani. But there were some unforgettable melodies too. Tum Se Milke Aisa Laga and Pyar Ke Mod Pe from Parinda were musically fantastic songs.
Tum Se Milke Aisa Laga has some interesting links. It is based on Albert Hammond's When I Need You. Hammond had infact based his song on Leonard Cohen’s immensely emotional Famous Blue Raincoat (1971) (hear from 1:20 onwards, check the tune the chorus is singing in the background)

Albert Hammond took it forward to present his version of the tune in 1976 with another emotional love song 'When I need you'.

This song was popularized next year (1977) by Leo Sayer. This version topped the Billboards UK chart.

Read further below to see versions of this song rendered by Rod Stewart, Celine Dione and others.

RD Burman used this tune. He changed the tempo to make it a bit fast and set in Waltz. The setting is such that the hero-heroine are hiding from a mafia gang and get trapped in their own home. Under those circumstances the hero proposes to her. This song was written by Khurshid Hallauri and directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali who was then assisting Director Vidhu Vinod Chopra. This romantic song was shot using shadow lighting making use of diffusion materials, like a piece of white cloth, or tracing paper in front of the light to make it softer and more natural. Excellent cinematography by Binod Pradhan. The song is sung by Suresh Wadkar and Asha Bhosle. After the passing away of Kishore Kumar,  RD was experimenting with various male voices and Suresh Wadkar was one of them.

So, put on your headphones and read along.

This song uses very little instruments. The main instruments are – Bass Guitar, Drum Sets, Violins, Piano, Keyboards and other Percussions. The song starts abruptly with pickup on the drums and key-boards. Madal, bass guitar and violins join in and before we realise it we are floating on a melody set in Waltz. RD has altered the typical Waltz beats to make them sharp almost 3/4 pattern. As the music starts we can immediately visualize the lead pair holding hands and dancing in circles. Had RD used Tabla instead of Drums, we'd have got a rhythm similar to Lata's Chupke Chupke Chal Ri Purvaiyya. But then this song is of youth and innocent exuberance, hence the use of Drumsets.

Notice how the song takes a breather after ऐ मेरी जाने वफ़ा (the third line in the Mukhda) and again using Bass Guitar and Drums as pickup it proceeds to complete the Mukhda. Use of Piano as a followup to तेरी मेरी मेरी तेरी एक जान है adds dollops of sweetness to the composition. Violins accompany the vocals all the time providing a perfect foil to the pitch as well as lightening the mood.

The Mukhda itself is unconventional with the rhyme scheme of the song going as A A A (pause) B C C

As is typical of RD’s style of music, the beats on the percussions continue in the first interlude music, with the Piano taking on from where the male vocal has ended. Violins continue in the background at a lower scale providing a contra melody. We enter the first Antara as the Accordians complete the last line of the Mukhda.

The interlude music for the second Antara is pure bliss with Violins and Piano romantically waltzing in the melody unmindful of anyone's presence. Drumset beats and Bass Guitar provide the fullness to complete the sound.

This is an immensely loved tune by many artistes. Here are some other versions of other artists.

Perry Como’s version. (As for Peire Como...I believe he is a French pianist.)

Rod Stewart had his own version released

And so did Celine Dion

Lastly, Julio Inglesias with somewhat changed lyrics
