The Monk And The Boat

A monk decided to meditate alone, away from his monastery. He took his boat out to the middle of the lake, moored it there, closed his eyes and began meditating. After a few hours of undisturbed silence, he suddenly felt the bump of another boat colliding with his own. With his eyes still closed, he felt his anger rising, and by the time he opened his eyes, he was ready to scream at the boatman who had so carelessly disturbed his meditation. But when he opened his eyes, he wa s surprised to find that it was an empty boat that had struck his own. It had probably gotten untethered and floated to the middle of the lake. At that moment, the monk had a great realization. He understood that the anger was within him; it merely needed the bump of an external object to provoke it out of him. From then on, whenever he came across someone who irritated him or provoked him to anger, he would remind himself, that the other person was merely an empty boat, the anger was within him...

Raah Pe Rahte Hain

Image
Today's song is one of the best compositions of Pancham-Gulzar-Kishore – Raah Pe Rahte Hai from Namkeen. Another fabulous song after Phir Se Aiyo Badra Bidesi. The movie had bombed at the box office and the song got lost wilderne ss. Everything about this song is top class – RD’s music, Gulzar’s words and Kishore’s rendition. Namkeen was made by Gulzar was based on Samaresh Basu's Akal Basant. In Gulzars words, Namkeen is a story of an incomplete family of three sisters and their mother, their alcoholic father and the tenant truck driver with fabulous performances by Sanjeev Kumar, Sharmila Tagore, Shabana Azmi and Waheeda Rehman.   Orchestration and arrangement: Resso resso, Bongo, Bass Guitar, violins, santoor and chorus. The entire song is woven around a basic rhythm played on resso resso, bongos and bass guitar. Trivia- The words ख़ुश रहो अहले वतन, हम तो सफ़र करते हैं are actually taken from Ram Prasad Bismil's poem. He was a revolutionary and Bhagat Singh...

Do Naina Aur Ek Kahani

Image
Do Naina Aur Ek Kahani This song from Masoom is as rich in melody as well as meaning as Tujhse Naaraz nahi zindagi. This is a lullaby sung by Aarti Mukherjee. Now lullabies are meant to calm and relaxing for the children being put to bed. Surely, the tune is soothing but the for the more matured, the pain and sadness becomes evident from the lyrics when the reference gets to eyes and tears. It conveys continuous sorrow, sorrow as a condition of life rather than a passing event in one’s life. It conveys this by addressing the helpless child who wishes for someone to come and love it. RD Burman has done a fantastic creation by setting tune to a lullaby in Raag Yaman structured on a Triveni. Triveni is a form of poetry created by Gulzar. Unlike a “Sher”, a “Triveni” consists of three "hemistichs" (misras). The first two lines complete the meaning, but the addition of the third misra gives a new dimension. Putting a rhyme to something that is symmetrical or “even” is do...

Khaali Hath Shaam Aayi Hai

Image
Pancham – Khaali Hath Shaam Aayi Hai Awesome song. This song from Ijaazat brings to fore RD’s command on classical. The song is picturised on Rekha (Sudha) who has walked out from Naseer’s (Mahender) home as she (despite making attempts) is unable to come to terms to his past (Anuradha Patel as Maya).    The dictionary meaning of "Loneliness" is "The pain of being alone, but having a desire for a connection". This is Sudha's state of mind.  For her, each evening arrives and departs without altering her emotional landscape. She expects sorrow, but that too refuses to visit her, leaving her numb.    In the song "evening" and "night" are personified as entities that just come and go without bringing ant resolution or closure. They are so familiar now that they are almost ritualistic in their futility.   Evenings are a time that a person in love looks forward to. But for a broken heart, evening can be a time of suffering waiting endlessly for...

Pancham - Jaane Do Na

Image
Pancham - Jaane Do Na Video https://youtu.be/PI7qRURU9D0?t=807 One of the all time best seductive/sensuous songs by Pancham is Jaane Do Na from Saagar. Asha Bhosle and Shailendra Singh have fantastically expressed the emotions of the couple who are deeply in love and get the opportunity to take the relationship to the next level ... getting physical. Asha expresses the dilemma of the young girl who is is keen but hesitant because of middle-class guilt. Shailendra Singh emotes the carefree attitude of the flamboyant rich guy (Rishi Kapoor) in love with the poor girl. Dimple in a red sari and backless blouse oozes sensuality in every movement. The song picturisation is done extremely aesthetically and the shadow play in the background caused by the light reflecting from the swimming pool sets the mood. With this setting, the song opens with a combination of bamboo flute and a regular one. Use of Bass guitar as the pickup and tabla beats relate to the flutter of heart beats ...

Rediscovering RD Aisa Sama Na Hota

Image
This blog was originally written on 1st January 2015. Re-updated today October 2025 with new links and some trivia. Aisa Samaa Naa Hota from Zameen Aasmaan Singer Lata Lyrics Anjaan Being in love is a feeling that has to be experienced to know it. R.D. Burman’s Aisa Sama Na Hota is a masterclass in restraint and emotional precision. The composition breathes with space, allowing Lata Mangeshkar’s voice to float like a memory suspended in twilight. The delicate melody on the flute sets a wistful tone, evoking the hush of dusk and the ache of unspoken longing. RD resists his usual flamboyance, instead crafting a soundscape where silence becomes a collaborator. The melody loops gently, like a thought one cannot let go of, mirroring the song’s theme of moments that could have been missed had it not been for the loved one.  I couldn't resist writing about the use of Bass.  Here the  Bass guitar not as a rhythmic anchor alone, but as a subtle emotional undercurrent...
