Besharam Rang

We have had so many songs in Hindi films where the hero is being seduced by the woman. In the 1950’s & 60’s it was mostly the vamp who used to indulge in such nefarious behaviour. The heroine too did it but it was a rarity. Think of Meena Kumari in “Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam” singing “Na jaao Saiyya Chhudaake baiyya” or a Madhubala singing “Aaiye Meherbaan” in “Howraah Bridge”.  Towards the end of 60’s and in the 70’s the heroine was presented in some light grey colors. She tried to seduce him playfully, the way Tanuja did in “Raat Akeli Hai - Jewel Thief”. Mumtaz doing a “Do Ghoont Mujhe Bhi Pila De” in “Jheel Ke Us Paar” to the act to some level of perversity.

Post 1970, the Hindi film heroine’s became more willing to shed clothes on screen and the trend became firmly established. In a nutshell, Hindi film heroines openly seducing the hero is nothing new. बेशरम रंग is just a victim of politics.

Coming to the song - Sharam means modesty, so literarily translated, “Besharam Rang - बेशरम रंग” means shameless color. Why should color be associated with shame? Keeping the politics apart, lets immerse ourselves in the realm of seduction and sensuality as lived by this heroine.

The heroine has her eyes & heart set on the hero. But unlike a “normal & coy” girl she is unabashedly inviting the hero. And she does not mind throwing caution to the winds and bringing out her true colors. As she says, “नशा चढ़ा जो शरीफी का उतार फेंका है, बेशरम रंग कहां देखा दुनिया वालों नेthat modesty was just a layer that she was wearing on herself, and she is now throwing it away to possess him. Here शरीफी is interpreted as modesty or decency.

This can be interpreted as catering to the lousy male gaze, but metaphorically बेशरम रंग is an poetic expression by the protagonist who after seeing the lover wants to entice him by showing her true colors… and these “true colors” are not of the typical feminine virtues.

 It starts with

Esta Noche La Vida Es Completa
El Esta Es Cuando La Vida Es Virica

Tonight, life is complete

This is the moment When Life Is Viral

Esta Noche La Vida Es Completa
El Esta Es Cuando La Vida Es Virica

हमे तो लूट लिया मिलके इश्क वालों ने
बहुत ही तंग किया अब तक इन ख्यालों ने

I was robbed in love’s disguise,
By those sweet but ruthless eyes.
These wild thoughts have teased too long,
Spinning tales both sharp and strong.

नशा चढ़ा जो शरीफी का उतार फेंका है
बेशरम रंग कहां देखा दुनिया वालों ने

Once I drank from virtue’s stream,
Now I shed that prim old dream.
Who’s seen shameless shades so bright?
Not this world, nor its starlit night
.

You speak so strange, so newly bold,
With habits fresh, no stories old.
What once was right, now no one claims—
Just the wrong that earns new names.

So I flung off grace’s gentle veil,
Let color bloom where rules grow pale.
And hearts conspire with rebel tone,
To leave no dream unloved, unknown.
We were robbed in love’s disguise,
By those sweet but ruthless eyes...
Yes—by the lovers, wild and wise.
