Tadap Tadap Ke Is Dil se

 

This song from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam won composor Ismail Darbar the Filmfare RD Burman award in 199. The film music also won the National award. This song penned by Mehboob Kotwal, and sung by KK (Krishnakumar Kunnath). Dominique Cerejo has also been credited for the song, but we don’t get to hear her at all! 

On MTV Unplugged KK had shared that there had been some technical glitch when recording this song. Ismail Darbar told him to sleep in the studio itself with the promise to wake him when the technical issues were sorted. Sure enough he woke up KK at 4 in the morning and then the final recording was done!

The composition is haunting. It starts classically in Double Bass and Cello (like Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam). It flows into dramatic crescendos only to be followed by eerie silences, as the melody twists and turns in every direction, further heightened by the soaring vocals.

The introduction – Bejaan dil ko बेजान दिल को तेरे –starts with lines that have more than one meaning.

बेजान दिल को तेरे
इश्क ने जिंदा किया
फीर तेरे इश्क ने ही
इस दिल को तबाह किया

बेजान दिल को तेरे	This lifeless heart (of mine)
इश्क ने जिंदा किया	Got a life with your love
फीर तेरे इश्क ने ही	Then this love of yours itself
इस दिल को तबाह किया	Destroyed my heart

This will be the straightforward meaning. Now if we go beyond the obvious and look at it from the protagonist’s view, the words suggest that he is saying “Putting love in your insensitive heart was a wasteful task. I was probably never meant to fall in love with you”

बेजान दिल को तेरे	This lifeless heart of yours
इश्क ने जिंदा किया	Was brought to life with (my) love
फीर तेरे इश्क ने ही	And then that love of yours
इस दिल को तबाह किया	Destroyed it

Then KK takes over. This song is in two parts – one that goes along with the story. The second stanza plays in the background at the end of movie. The Mukhda of this song does not have any rhyme scheme.

The stanza’s have an interesting pattern. The first four lines follow A B C B rhyme scheme. The last line (line eight - तेरा चेहरा नज़र आये) of the next set of three lines becomes the starting line of the next set of three lines and the next three (तेरी यादें तड़पाएं) as well and then we return to the Mukhda.

अजब है इश्क यारा

The unique rhyme pattern is in the second stanza as well. Look at the use of lines - वाह रे वाह तेरी कुदरत and कभी है मिलन कभी फुरक़त

जिस्म मुझे देके मिट्टी का
शीशे सा दिल क्यों बनाया

और उसपे दिया फितरत (nature, स्वभाव)
के वो करता है मोहब्बत
